Do you remember when Waninkoko said that Gamecube USB backups via software would be impossible? Well, crediar (creator of preloader and SNEEK) is making the impossible possible with his new program, DIOS MIOS!

While the WODE modchip released last year allowed Wii owners to play Gamecube backups from a USB hard drive, it was only possible through a hardware modification. Now with DIOS MIOS!, users can play thier ‘cube copies from USB, no hardmod required!

To prove crediar isn’t bluffing, he has released a proof-of-concept video and a USB Gecko log of him playing Starfox Assault on this new loader. Check it out!

Currently, no release date has been set.

Mind you, if you were silly enough to update to 4.3, you’ll need to go through a LOT of extra steps in order to get this working properly.

Well, this didn’t take long! ‘sploiter J416 has already found exploits on Sony’s new PSP 6.30 firmware, within a week of its release! For security reasons, they cannot display the game that is used for the exploit, as it is only available on the PSN store, and it would be very quickly taken off, patched and replaced by Sony. It does confirm, however, that there are still readily available exploits on the PSP.

Whether or not it is a user or kernel exploit is not yet known. My money is on user exploit. However, if it really is a kernel exploit, it would be a tremendous breakthrough, as there is currently no publicly available kernel exploit for 6.20 (A 6.20 kernel exploit has been found, however).

WARNING: As of the September 8 / Metroid Other M update, this method no longer works!

WiiCrazy has done it again! He has managed to find a way to get Trucha Bug Restorer working on System Menu 4.3! This method does not require you to use cBoot2, so there’s no need to have BootMii installed.

There is one downside, though. This method will NOT work on Korean Wiis (ie. Wiis with System Menu 4.3K).

It works by installing an old version of an IOS not included in Nintendo’s 4.3 update (in this case, a Korean IOS, IOS41), which can allow you to use TBR’s downgrade functionality again. It’s a Nintendo-signed IOS, so it will install all fine and dandy through WAD Manager.

A very stupid mistake by Nintendo not to include the Korean IOSs. Have they learnt nothing from IOS16? Probably not.

You will need:

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (for NTSC Wiis) or Lego Indiana Jones (for any Wii), plus the applicable exploit for the game (Smash Stack and Indiana Pwns respectively)

A homebrew loader (Homebrew Channel doesn’t work at the time of writing. Loadmii will get the job done for now)

Trucha Bug Restorer

WAD Manager

IOS41-64-v2835.wad (This can be downloaded using NUS Downloader)

Here’s what you do:

Make sure your homebrew loader is on the root of your SD Card under the name “boot.dol”

Load Smash Stack or Indiana Pwns as per the given instructions.

Your homebrew loader should now load (We’ll be using Loadmii for this example). Open WAD Manager.

Install IOS41-64-v2836.wad. It’s a Nintendo signed IOS, so it will install like normal.

Exit WAD Manager.

You should be back in your homebrew loader. Load TBR.

Select IOS41

Downgrade IOS15

You should be back in your homebrew loader. Load TBR again.

Select IOS15

Go to IOS36 Menu

Make sure “patch trucha” is selected and install.

You should now be back in your homebrew loader. Load TBR again.

Select IOS36

Restore IOS15

You should be back in your homebrew loader. Load WAD Manager

Select IOS36

Delete IOS41-36-v2836.wad

Now, fell free to do whatever it is you do with trucha patched IOS!

Following Nintendo’s suit, Sony has released System Software 6.20 for its PSP system. Unlike Nintendo’s latest Wii System Menu update, this update actually adds some new functionality, though it’s nothing to get excited about, and is also designed to kill homebrew and exploits. If you want to update, go nuts, but we suggest you don’t, especially if you’re on an unhackable 2000, any 3000 or PSPgo, or if you use CFW or HENs. Full details below….

This update…

…adds the function to group and display folders based on format under Game (it should also be noted that there is folders for NeoGeo and TurboGrafx-16, but these are already playable via homebrew emulators)

…stops the Patapon 2 Savedata exploit and Half-Byte Loader from working

…also stops Datel’s Action Replay from working.

UPDATE: <s>Wow, compiling cBoot2 was harder than I thought. Can anyone please share a compiled ARMBOOT.BIN please?</s> Disregard, I have a working ARMBOOT.BIN now!

So, in case you didn’t already know, System Menu 4.3 got released yesterday. You may already know that this update is designed to kill homebrew (by simply putting in checks for the Homebrew Channel and DVDX and deleting them if found, among other things), but what you may not know is that this update is also designed to stop some homebrew applications from working, namely Riivolution and Trucha Bug Restorer.

We don’t know what stops Riivolution from working, but we do know what is stopping TBR from working. According to WiiBrew, ES_AddTitleFinish now checks installed titles for signatures, and “NANDFS Privelage Escalation” has been fixed. TBR relies on both of these to work, and seems the bulk of HomebreFreeware’s job is to patch trucha back into an IOS using TBR, we need to look at different ways of installing trucha back into an IOS. When I first read “(Trucha Bug Restorer and similar won’t work anymore)”, I let out a very audiable “Oh, SHIT.”. But that’s when I remembered another lesser known homebrew program!

cBoot2, as you could probably imagine, is a Custom boot2 program created by WiiGator. It works through BootMii, and through using it, you can patch an IOS-on-the-fly, run a program such as WAD Manager to install a patched IOS, and you’ll be back on your way! However, there is a downside to this. According to cBoot2′s readme, cBoot2 only works through direct boot (BootMii is boot2, not IOS), so you’ll need to be able to install BootMii as boot2 to install a patched IOS, at least until a newer patching application or another revision of cBoot2 is created.

Of course, this is only theoretical. I will test this theory out as soon as I get home from school today on a controlled system, both through boot2 and IOS, and I will post my findings. Assuming I can actually install a patched SM4.3 and IOS80, I will also test it on this as well. And finally, of course, I can’t test this on a Nintendo-updated 4.3 console, because no HackMii Installer exists for it yet. When a HackMii Installer exists for 4.3 (hopefully soon), I’ll be sure to give it a go on that.

Wii System Menu 4.3 has been released by Nintendo late this afternoon. Not much is known about it, except that it’s another homebrew killing update. If you use homebrew, or plan to use homebrew on your Wii, it is reccommended that users DO NOT UPDATE UNTIL MORE IS KNOWN ABOUT IT! <s>At this time, HomebreFreeware is incompatible with System Menu 4.3</s> Disregard that, HomebreFreeware 1.43 works with System Menu 4.3. Technical details below:

This new System Menu…

uses IOS80

kills all variants of Homebrew Channel and DVDX (HAXX, DVDX, JODI, DISC and DISK)

deletes BootMii/IOS by stubbing IOS254

fixes bannerbomb, a little less stupidly this time

adds IOS58

overwrites and stubs all cIOS’ (202, 222, 223, 249 and 250), again

kills the ability to use Riivolution Riivolution v1.03 works on 4.2

still pushes the dangerous boot2 update

If you would like to use the Wii Shop Channel without updating your Wii, use a program such as Dop-SHOP or DOP-Mii

In order to play ROMs and DS Homebrew on your DS, you will need to buy a flashcart. However, not all flashcarts are the same, so I’ve devised this buyer’s guide to help you make your decision on which cart you should buy!

(Derived from /v/’s Recommended Games Wiki’s article – available here)

Acekard 2/2i

Price – Very cheap

Performance – Excellent compatibility, but lacks features of more expensive carts

Good? Bad? - Great

Compatible with DSi? Yes

Compatible with DSi 1.4? Yes, but not out of the box. You may need a DS Lite to reflash the AK2i’s firmware.

This is a flashcart best known for its unofficial AKAIO firmware, which is known for super-quick updates and some of the best compatibility of any DS flashcart. Highly reccommended for first-time buyers.

CycloDS Evolution

Price - Very expensive

Performance - Excellent compatibility, cool features like Real-Time Save and In-Game Guide

Good? Bad? - Great

Compatible with DSi? No

Compatible with DSi 1.4? No

Although pricey, this flashcart has regular updates and an excellent support team. It doesn’t work with the DSi, however.

DS TT

Price - Very Cheap

Performance - Decent compatibility with older games, very buggy UI

Good? Bad? - Okay

Compatible with DSi? Yes

Compatible with DSi 1.4? No

A somewhat buggy, but cost effective DS flashcart. It can be a little hard to set up. If you really can’t afford the extra couple of dollars for an AK2, this will get the job done.

EDGE/iEDGE

Price - Average

Performance - Great compatibility, but without the other cool features of the CycloDS

Good? Bad? - Okay

Compatible with DSi? Yes

Compatible with DSi 1.4? Unknown

A CycloDS Evolution clone. It’s relatively cheaper, but lacks the other RTS and In-Game Guide functions. Also has the same slow as hell menu. You’d be better off with a CycloDS.

iPlayer

Price - Average

Performance - Designed for homebrew and media. NOT compatible with DS ROMs

Good? Bad? - Okay

Compatible with DSi? Yes

Compatible with DSi 1.4? Unknown

Has a built-in CPU so you can play music and video files without conversion. Also. thanks to the built-in CPU, it also boasts a dedicated GBA emulator, which means you can play GBA ROMs without a Slot-2 device and on the DSi!

M3 DS Real (Not to be mistaken for M3 DS Simply)

Price - Relatively cheap

Performance - Good compatibility, nice looking UI

Good? Bad? - Good

Compatible with DSi? No

Compatible with DSi 1.4? No

An actual original M3 cart. Can be used with either “Sakura” or “Touchpod” firmware. Usually comes with a Slot-2 device which lets you play GBA ROMs and has a built-in rumble pak.

M3i Zero

Price - Average

Performance – Pretty much the same as Real, but DSi compatible

Good? Bad? - Good

Compatible with DSi? Yes

Compatible with DSi 1.4? Yes

One of the only “future-proof” carts available. Firmware can be flashed via a USB cable (unlike needing to be flashed using a DS Lite, like the AK2i). Not updated often, but does its job.

R4 DS/R4i DS

Price - Very cheap

Performance – (Official) Support dropped years ago, very outdated flashcart

Good? Bad? - Complete and utter crap A little bit better (but not much) thanks to Wood R4 firmware

Compatible with DSi? Yes

Compatible with DSi 1.4? No

Thanks to yellow-wood-goblin’s Wood R4 firmware, your outdated R4 now has a purpose again, with some really nice compatibility fixes. It doesn’t beat AK or CycloDS, however, but is really cheap. AVOID CLONES LIKE THE PLAGUE

Supercard DSONE/DSONEi

Price - A little pricey

Performance - Great compatibility with games that don’t need patching, also supports Real-Time Saves and In-Game Guide (but is a little buggy)

Good? Bad? - Okay

Compatible with DSi? Yes

Compatible with DSi 1.4? Unknown

If you’re interested in this, you may want to invest in a DSTWO (details below)

Supercard DSTWO

Price - Somewhat expensive

Performance - Built-in CPU (like that of the iPlayer) allows for native GBA and SNES emulation, and games (apparently) NEVER need patching.

Good? Bad? - Great

Compatible with DSi? Yes

Compatible with DSi 1.4? Yes

A first for flashcarts, comes with a “Free Cheat” system , which allows people to create their own cheats while playing the game. Also has all the features of DSONE.

So, now you’ve decided which cart to buy, you will also need to consider what kind of memory you would like for your cart (in the form of a MicroSD Card). All carts support MicroSD Cards up to 2GB, and most support MicroSDHC Cards up to 16GB.

1GB – Enough to store a few games at a time. Delete them when you’re done with them.

2GB – Enough to store a few more games and some homebrew. Can also hold a full NES collection and the emulator for it, with some space to spare

4GB – More than enough to store a good collection of DS games, maybe more than you need.

8GB – More than enough to store games, and whole MP3 albums and DPG movies to play in Moonshell

Just in case I haven’t stated strongly enough, Wii Unlocker Ultra is a scam site! Users are reminded that you should not use Wii Unlocker Ultra to hack your Wii, or any other site which requires you to pay for a service, and instead use either the HomebreFreeware Wii Softmod package, or the more reputable Modify any Wii guide (both of which are 100% FREE!) instead.

(Thanks to techboy from GBAtemp for initally posting this info!)

Here is a quick analisys of what is inside the Wii Unlocker Ultra (myhomebreware.com) “members area” page (What you get when you pay for the site). Firstly, there are 3 options for “unlocking” your Wii. “4.2 The Latest Update”, “4.1 And Prior” and “3.4 And Prior”. These link to a page with a ZIP file, a video, and in 2 of 3 cases, a guide.

The 4.2 hacking option:
A video tutorial for using bannerbomb+hackmii installer is posted at the bottom of the page. No guide is present. The video clearly shows the scam messages on bannerbomb and hackmii installer. Although the page claims the files do not provide backup support, his ZIP contains loader software.

The ZIP contains: an outdated USB Loader GX rev688, NeoGamma R7, cIOS rev14 Installer, wads of NeoGamma & GX, HackMii Installer, Bannerbomb v2, Homebrew Browser, an IOS38 v3610 wad in the root, and the WiiNinja & Sorg mod of Wad Manager 1.5.

UPDATE: There is a little button below the main 4.2 option for 4.2 with backup support. He used the cboot2 method. The guide is poorly written here as usual, and no video is available. Video says coming November 5, 2009, but it’s Xmas Eve and still not there.

There are several zip files offered as Wiihackstep2a/b/c. They contain various compilations of cboot2 and wad manager, used to delete the IOS249 stub. WiihackStep3a is the cIOS installer and cboot2 again.
The 4.1 and prior option:
The page itself is labeled “4.0+”. A movie plus a guide are found. The guide was poorly written, and used long obsolete methods, including the IOS35 downgrader.

The ZIP includes cIOS_249.wad (rev6), HBC.wad, “gameplayer.wad”, and IOS35.wad, as well as several DOLs in the root and bannerbomb.

The 3.4 and prior option:
Another poorly written guide, and another movie. This guide uses the IOS16 method.

The ZIP contains IOS16.wad, cIOS_249.wad (cIOS rev6), and a “Gameplayer.wad”, along with Wad Manager, an unpacked IOS36, bannerbomb v1, and an unknown boot.dol

Below these options are the “bonuses”, the “Wii DVD Unlocker” for playing movies is just a copy of MPlayer CE and the USB2 cIOS 202 in a ZIP file, “Wii Reigon Fry” is SYNDiCATE’s ISO patcher, “Wii Brick Blocker” is just a copy of Brick Blocker (what did you expect?), the “Wii DVD Dumper” is a copy an old Wi-fi game Dumper in WAD form, plus a copy of Wad Manager, the cheat guide at the top is something semi-original; It’s title page & page headers refer to the package as MyHomebreWii, and finally, the “Backup Wii Games Guide and Software” is a PDF detailing how to use Wii Dumper and Brick Blocker. It’s poorly written, and some steps are inaccurate.

This information was last updated 25 December 2009. However, we have confirmation that Wii Unlocker Ultra has rolled all of their packages into the one ZIP file. They still contain blatant Copyright and License violations. IOS WADs, bannerbomb, and the Homebrew Channel as a WAD, just to name a few.

Hopefully, this will help curb a bit of curiosity that you might have about these scam sites!

At the moment, we can only speculate what could be in this new cIOS. Waninkoko has been experimenting with IOS Reload blocking, and has successfully blocked reloading IOSs from a DVD, but there’s no news on whether or not it has been blocked from USB. You can expect to see that in this newest revision!

What else do you think we will see?

UPDATE: Waninkoko says that a sneak peek of cIOS Rev 20 will be coming soon! Be sure to check out the #cIOS IRC channel on irc.freenode.net for the latest news!
